This means your goal is not to complete the marathon, your goal is to continue completing marathons: she talks about someone who ignored pain to the point of breaking her leg to compmlete a marathon. That person can no longer do marathons. If this job, this assignment, is killing you, then you need to stop and assess whether it’s doing long-term damage so you can stay in the game for the next hand. Strangely enough I encountered this one in Lionel Shriver’s (fiction) book The Motion of the Body Through Space.
