The SCARF model is from David Rock’s work in Neuro-Leadership.
It says when these conditions are satisfied, people are resourceful. Contravene just one, or even a few of them and people become “difficult”.
So to help people change do as much as you can to satisfy these conditions:
- Status (make me feel important)
- Certainty (tell me what you know, and also what you don’t know, be relied upon to tell me when you can)
- Autonomy (give me some choice and options)
- Relatedness (make me feel part of something bigger)
- Fairness (make sure I know how it works, show how merit is earned, tell the story that justifies it).
Here’s another summary.
