I have of late being talking to old work friends on Linked In. Nik recommended Diary of a CEO as a good podcast, and so far, so good.
This Diary of a CEO with Esther Perel episode was interesting for a number of reasons. Perel is famously a couple’s therapist. Part of her thesis is that we have been experiencing Social Atrophy for a few years now. People don’t talk to each other, don’t talk to strangers, barely talk to each other when they are a couple.
She talks a little towards the end of this podcast about how couple’s therapy work transfers to the workplace.
Quoting the work of Howard Markman, she says people argue for 3 things
Power and control: who makes the decision, whose priorities matter most
Trust, care, closeness
Respect and recognition do I value you, do you matter
Howard Markman
Because I’m involved in singing several times a week and I believe in its magic as a tonic for all things human, I was also charmed by this, one of her prescriptions for social atrophy.
Anybody these days who can make people laugh or sing together is doing holy work
Esther Perel
