Meaning and Mattering

Eat Sleep Work Repeat guy, Bruce Daisley interviews Tamara Wyles and Wes Adams in this podcast about meaning and mattering at work.

They tell a great story about “following the bride” – a rainy day wedding in what would have been a glorious sunny day location, but became almost lethal in the rain (slipping off cliffs isn’t a good idea!). The wedding planner’s advice was to “follow the bride”, and the advice to her was to just have a great time. There was mud and mayhem, but no accidents, and everyone loved the wedding. Leaders need to be the same.

Here are some other factoids and ideas

  • one recognition of contribution per week turns people around
  • 50% of your work meaning comes from your boss
  • use the words “if it wasn’t for you”, or “because of you”
  • Burnout is not just hard work.  But lack of meaning plus work
  • People need belief-driven feedback too “you can do this”
  • People need Community, Contribution, Challenge

Worth a listen.
