I’ve been running a leadership program for the past year or so. I do a BIG frame at the beginning about the importance of putting your phone to silent, to off, and/or just looking at it in breaks. Because being present is the first step to leading yourself and others.
There remains a select percentage of every group who believe that they are somehow immune to the science. That they can multi-task (or switch task, more specifically) without getting fatigued, can prolong a text conversation and an email engagement while also searching their inner world for the kind of leader they want to be, coach another person or uncover their unconscious biases. What they don’t know is:
the more people multitask, the worse they are, not just at other mental abilities, but at multitasking itself.
